On Monday, January 7, 2013, the Hollister City Council unanimously and enthusiastically voted to bring back the world renowned Fourth of July motorcycle rally for the 2013 season. The reborn event, which has been on hold since 2009, is set to take place on July 5 & 6, 2013.
The American Biker image was born in Hollister Fourth of July weekend in 1947 when a group of rowdy bikers in town for the annual Gypsy Tour event reportedly terrorized the town. The story was picked up by Life magazine who published the iconic photo of a drunken biker sprawled on his bike amid a sea of beer bottles. The exaggeration was further sensationalized in the Marlon Brando pic “The Wild One.”
The image stuck and has become an icon of Americana that lives to this day.
After “The Invasion of Hollister”, the annual Gypsy Tour event went dormant for decades. In preparation for the 50th anniversary of the historic event, Sonny Barger presented the idea of a rebirth to the city of Hollister and local business people. It took a lot of effort by many people, but it didn’t take long for the Hollister Independence Day Rally to became the largest Motorcycle Rally on the West Coast.
Unfortunately, due to the excessive financial risk, the City of Hollister put the official Hollister Rally on hold in 2009. During that time, local supporters like Mike Corbin (Corbin saddles) continued to keep the spirit alive and welcomed riders to town with their own private events over the weekend. Meanwhile large numbers of supporters were working to bring back the official event. Those efforts paid off on January 7th 2013 with the official nod from the City Council to sanction an event.
Worldwide Dynamics Inc. presented a proposal to the city and has been named the rally management company. An active member of the Motorcycle Industry Council, Worldwide Dynamics is well known in the industry for organizing vendors and sponsors at Leesburg Bikefest, Laconia, Sturgis, and at Bikes, Blues and BBQ.
Attendees can expect motorcycle-only parking filling downtown Hollister with side streets devoted to a wide variety of rally vendors. Two large entertainment areas downtown will offer live entertainment and local beer gardens. On Saturday, center lane parking on the main drag will be occupied by the official bike show which is a part of the World Championship of Bike Building. Motorcycle manufacturers will be in attendance at multiple locations offering demo rides.
Riders will receive an enthusiastic welcome back from local businesses, eateries and taverns for this annual town highlight. Around the area there is excellent scenic riding, wine tours and a summer concert series at a local vineyard’s outdoor amphitheater. Naturally Mike Corbin will be hosting his annual Rider Appreciation Day at the Corbin factory on the north side of town as well.
We would like to extend our gratitude to the multitudes of people who have come together to restore the Hollister Rally dream. From the thousands of riders who continued to come to town every Fourth of July to the local community whose high spirits and enthusiasm brought about this return.
Special thanks to:
Dave Westrick & Carlos Reynoso of the Hollister PD who presented the working budget for public services and received a standing ovation for their efforts.
Mark Cresswell and Clint Quilter for their vision and creating a rally proposal that works
for everyone.
Former mayor and current councilman Ray Friend along with councilman Robert Scattini for their endless support and tireless efforts.
Sonny Barger for having the idea back in 1995 to get this all going.
Mike Corbin for his long standing support and community efforts.
Hollister’s new Mayor elect Ignacio Velazquez for his leadership and communication skills bringing it all together.
Charisse Tyson, Cristy Howe and hundreds of other Hollister citizens and business people who’s enthusiasm and drive kept the dream going!
See you in Hollister July 5th & 6th 2013
